About McEntire Joint National Guard Base

McEntire Joint National Guard Base is a military airfield serving Columbia and Richland County, South Carolina. The installation traces its origins to the former Congaree Army Airfield, which was activated in January 1943, and was later renamed in 1961 in honor of Brigadier General Barnie B. McEntire, the first commander of the South Carolina Air National Guard.

Located approximately 15 miles southeast of Columbia and near the town of Eastover, the roughly 2,400-acre base is home to the South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing and South Carolina Army National Guard aviation units. It supports fighter, helicopter and joint training operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger flights.

As a restricted military installation, McEntire JNGB does not function as a public airport, and civilian access is limited. Road connections link the base to Columbia and the surrounding Midlands area, while Columbia Metropolitan Airport serves as the region's main commercial gateway.

The base provides operational infrastructure including multiple runways, hangars, maintenance facilities and support for transient military aircraft by prior coordination.
