Mbala Airport is a small regional airport serving Mbala, a town in Zambia's Northern Province near the Tanzanian border. The airport sits about 3–4 km west of the town centre within the grounds of the Samora Machel Airbase, which is operated by the Zambian Air Force.
Historically a military airbase, the facility was opened to civil aviation and commercial flights in April 2015. Proflight Zambia subsequently introduced scheduled flights between Lusaka and Mbala, strengthening domestic air links to this part of Northern Province.
The airport has a single asphalt runway aligned roughly 12/30 and limited terminal infrastructure. Because it shares the site with military operations, civil flights are coordinated with the Zambian Air Force.
Road connections link the airport to Mbala town and onward to Mpulungu on Lake Tanganyika and Kalambo Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Africa. For travelers to Northern Province, the airport provides a convenient, though small, domestic gateway.
