About Maxwell Air Force Base
This U.S. Air Force installation in Montgomery, Alabama, is the headquarters of Air University, the service's center for professional military education and leadership development. Its airfield and support facilities also serve the 42nd Air Base Wing, the 908th Airlift Wing, and associate units.
The site's aviation history reaches back to 1910, when the Wright brothers opened a civilian flying school there. The U.S. Army established an engine and repair depot in 1918, and in 1922 the field was renamed for Lt. William C. Maxwell. During the 1930s it hosted the Air Corps Tactical School, later supported pilot training in World War II, and became the home of Air University in 1946.
Located about 2 miles northwest of downtown Montgomery, the base sits close to I-65 and I-85, with Montgomery Regional Airport roughly 5 nautical miles to the south. These road and air links make it relatively easy to connect with central Montgomery and other parts of central Alabama.
The airfield has a main runway of about 8,000 feet plus a shorter secondary runway, and it operates as a controlled-access military facility. For official visitors and military personnel, it functions as a practical arrival point for travel to Montgomery and the surrounding River Region.
