María Montez International Airport is the main airport serving Barahona and the southwestern Dominican Republic. Named after the Barahona-born actress María Montez, it opened in 1996 as part of efforts to open the region to tourism and regional development.
Located about 5 km north of Barahona city, the airport provides a gateway to the Pedernales coast and ecotourism destinations including Bahía de las Águilas, Lago Enriquillo and Jaragua National Park. Its single terminal covers about 2,565 square metres, and its 3,000-metre runway can receive large aircraft.
Commercial traffic is limited; the airport mainly handles occasional domestic flights, charters and private aviation, while many travelers reach the area by road from Santo Domingo, roughly 200 km or three hours away.
