About Yuma
San Rafael del Yuma, commonly known simply as Yuma, is a municipality in the eastern Dominican Republic within La Altagracia province. It centres on a small inland town and extends toward the Caribbean coast, where the districts of Boca de Yuma and Bayahibe add fishing villages, beaches and protected natural areas to the municipality's character.
The Yuma River and its surroundings have long shaped local life, from Taíno settlement and colonial trade routes to the legend of pirate Roberto Cofresí, who is said to have sheltered in caves near Boca de Yuma. San Rafael del Yuma became a municipality in 1961, and the area still mixes farming and cattle raising with fishing and a steadily growing tourism economy.
Boca de Yuma sits at the mouth of the Yuma River and is known for boat and kayak trips past mangrove channels, birdlife and Cofresí's cave. Bayahibe, to the south, is a beach town and diving hub that serves as the main departure point for Saona and Catalina islands, while Cotubanamá National Park protects coastal forest, caves and marine habitats nearby.
Tourism is strongest around Bayahibe and Dominicus, where hotels, dive centres and beach clubs cater to visitors, while the municipal seat keeps a quieter, everyday Dominican atmosphere. Its location between La Romana and Punta Cana gives travellers easy access to international airports, resorts and excursion routes.
For visitors, Yuma offers a less crowded alternative to Punta Cana with river, cave, beach and national park experiences in one municipality, while its proximity to major airports and resort infrastructure also makes it practical for business travel and events.
