About Macon Downtown Airport
Macon Downtown Airport (MAC) is a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport located about 3 miles (5.6 km) southeast of downtown Macon, Georgia. Dedicated in 1937 and historically known as Herbert Smart Downtown Airport, it was used as Macon Army Air Base during the early 1940s before returning to civilian operations.
The airport serves private pilots, flight training and executive aircraft, providing convenient access to Macon and the Central Georgia region. It features a single asphalt runway, Runway 10/28, which is 4,694 feet long, along with a terminal and FBO building operated by Middle Georgia State University. The airport is managed by TBI Airport Management on behalf of Macon-Bibb County.
Because Macon Downtown Airport does not offer scheduled commercial passenger service, most arriving travelers reach the city by car, taxi, ride service or private transfer. The airport is close to downtown Macon by road, and scheduled airline flights in the region are handled at Middle Georgia Regional Airport, roughly 9 miles to the southwest.
For general aviation visitors, the airport offers fuel, aircraft parking, flight school services and a convenient location for reaching Macon's business district, universities and surrounding communities.
