About MacDill Air Force Base
MacDill Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation on the southwestern tip of the Interbay Peninsula in Hillsborough County, Florida. Established in 1939 and activated in 1941, it is named for Colonel Leslie MacDill and has served as a major military aviation and command hub for the Tampa Bay region.
Today the base is an Air Mobility Command installation operated by the 6th Air Refueling Wing, with KC-135 refueling aircraft and additional support from the 927th Air Refueling Wing. It is also home to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, making it one of the most significant military installations in the southeastern United States.
MacDill sits about eight miles south of downtown Tampa and is reached mainly by road via Dale Mabry Highway and Bayshore Boulevard. The installation is a controlled-access military airfield, and scheduled commercial flights for the region are handled by nearby Tampa International Airport.
For authorized passengers and visitors, the base offers a passenger terminal, dining and support services, with downtown Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and the Gulf Coast beaches within a short drive.
