About Luke Air Force Base
Luke Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Glendale, Arizona, and one of the country's major fighter pilot training bases. It is named for Second Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr., a Phoenix native and World War I ace who received the Medal of Honor.
Construction at the site began in 1941, and the installation became Luke Air Force Base in 1951. Today the 56th Fighter Wing trains F-16 and F-35 pilots for the U.S. Air Force and partner nations, earning the base the nickname "Home of the Fighter Pilot."
Located about 15 miles west of downtown Phoenix and roughly 7 miles west of central Glendale, the base sits within the Phoenix metropolitan area's West Valley. Road connections link it to Glendale, Phoenix, Peoria, Surprise and other nearby communities.
Luke AFB is primarily a military airfield rather than a commercial passenger airport, so public terminal services are limited and access is generally restricted to authorized personnel and visitors.
