About Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is the main commercial airport serving Louisville, Kentucky, and the surrounding region. Originally opened in 1941 as Standiford Field, the airport became Louisville International Airport in 1995 and was renamed in 2019 in honor of Louisville native Muhammad Ali.
Located about six miles south of downtown Louisville, SDF is a major hub for UPS and one of the busiest cargo airports in the world, while also serving domestic passenger routes and connecting business and leisure travelers to the city and wider Bluegrass region.
Passenger flights operate from the Jerry E. Abramson Terminal, a single main terminal with two concourses. The SDF Next modernization program has brought expanded security checkpoints, refreshed dining and retail, and other passenger-focused improvements.
The airport is connected to downtown Louisville by TARC buses, taxis, rideshare services, rental cars, and private transfers, with typical drive times of around 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
