About London Southend Airport
London Southend Airport is a minor international airport on the outskirts of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, serving the London region and the Essex coast. Opened as a municipal airport in 1935, it has evolved from wartime and early cross-channel operations into a compact commercial airport, with a new passenger terminal opened in 2012 and a runway extension that allowed larger short-haul aircraft.
The airport operates from a single terminal where check-in, security and arrivals are all close together, keeping walking distances short and screening typically quick. Facilities include the SKYLIFE Lounge, cafés and bars, duty-free and convenience shopping, free Wi-Fi and charging points.
Located roughly 64 km (40 miles) east of central London, the airport has its own railway station about 100 steps from the terminal, with direct services to London Liverpool Street in around 52–53 minutes and to Stratford in around 40 minutes.
