Lihue Airport is the main airport serving the island of Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle. Opened in 1949 and located on Kauai's southeast coast, the airport connects the island with interisland flights, U.S. mainland routes, and occasional seasonal international service.
The airport uses a single open-air passenger terminal, the Kawakami Terminal, with a ground-level layout for ticketing, security screening, gate access, baggage claim, and ground transportation. The current terminal was inaugurated in 1987, and the airfield includes two runways and eight gates.
Lihue Airport sits about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of downtown Lihue, close to Kapule Highway and Ahukini Road. Travelers can reach the city and Kauai's resort areas by public bus, taxi, rideshare, rental car, hotel shuttle, and private transfer.
