About Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport

Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport serves Gainesville, Hall County and the surrounding northeast Georgia region as a public-use general and corporate aviation facility. It supports private, business and charter flights rather than scheduled airline service and is located close to Lake Lanier and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The airport began as a dirt airstrip in 1941. In 1943 the U.S. Navy leased the land, developed runways and support buildings for World War II training, and returned the improved facility to the City of Gainesville in 1947. It was named in 1971 in honor of local aviation pioneer Lee Gilmer.

Today the city-owned airport covers about 359 acres and operates two asphalt runways: 5/23 at 5,500 feet and 11/29 at 4,001 feet. It is roughly 3 km (2 mi) from downtown Gainesville and about 55 miles northeast of Atlanta, with road connections to nearby communities and the Lake Lanier area.

Pilot and passenger services are provided through the on-site fixed-base operator, flight center, maintenance and charter businesses, with a historic terminal building, fuel, aircraft parking, rental cars and meeting space available.
