Lawson Army Airfield is a U.S. Army military airfield located at Fort Moore, formerly Fort Benning, in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, south of Columbus. It serves as the installation's primary force projection platform and supports military aviation, training and authorized civil operations.
The airfield traces its origins to a rudimentary landing field established at Fort Benning in 1919 and was named in 1931 in honor of Captain Walter R. Lawson. Today it operates a single main runway, Runway 15/33, measuring about 10,000 feet in length.
Located roughly 11 miles by road from downtown Columbus, the airfield is reached through Fort Moore and connects to the Columbus area by road. There is no scheduled commercial airline service; flight operations are primarily military, with civilian aircraft admitted only with prior permission.
