Originally known as Huntington Airport, the field was established in 1929 and was used by American Airlines for early passenger service in the 1930s before evolving into a general aviation facility.
The airport is owned by the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners and is located about two miles west of Chesapeake, just across the Ohio River from Huntington, West Virginia.
