About Laughlin Air Force Base
Laughlin Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation that serves as one of the service's primary undergraduate pilot training bases. Home to the 47th Flying Training Wing, the airfield trains student pilots using the T-6A Texan II, T-38 Talon, and T-1A Jayhawk aircraft and is among the busiest military airfields in the Air Force.
The installation was activated in July 1942 and officially dedicated as Laughlin Army Air Field in 1943. It was named in honor of First Lieutenant Jack Thomas Laughlin, a Del Rio native killed in action during World War II. The 47th Flying Training Wing has conducted pilot training at the base since 1972.
Laughlin AFB is located about 5 miles east of Del Rio, Texas, in Val Verde County, roughly 150 miles west of San Antonio and near the international bridge to Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico. The airfield has three runways and supports extensive flight training operations.
Because Laughlin AFB is a restricted military installation, it does not handle commercial passenger traffic. Travelers flying to the Del Rio area typically use Del Rio International Airport, located nearby, and continue by car or taxi to the city and surrounding region.
