The airfield was built during World War II as an auxiliary field serving Camp Laguna and the former Yuma Army Air Field, now Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. It has remained in use and continues to support the proving ground's test mission.
Located about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of central Yuma, the airfield has two asphalt runways, a control tower, and helipad areas. Road access is available via U.S. Highway 95, which connects the proving ground with Yuma and the surrounding region.
