La Isabela International Airport is the secondary airport serving Santo Domingo and the wider Dominican Republic. Officially named Dr. Joaquín Balaguer International Airport, it opened in 2006 as a replacement for the former Herrera International Airport.
Located in the El Higüero sector of Santo Domingo Norte, about 15 km north of the Colonial Zone, the airport focuses on domestic flights, private aviation and regional Caribbean routes rather than long-haul international traffic. It is also a base for Air Century and a centre for charter and air taxi operations.
The airport has a compact two-level terminal with arrivals on the ground floor and check-in, security and departures on the upper level. Its smaller scale means short walking distances and generally fast passenger processing compared with the city's larger Las Américas International Airport.
Access is mainly by taxi, ride-hailing services or rental car along Avenida Presidente Antonio Guzmán Fernández, with public transport links on the nearby main road. Despite limited commercial amenities, the airport offers a convenient, uncrowded gateway for travellers connecting within the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
