Koyukuk Airport (KYU) is a state-owned, public-use airport serving Koyukuk, a small community in Alaska's Yukon–Koyukuk Census Area. Activated in November 1949 and owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Northern Region, the airport provides an essential air link for a village with no permanent road access.
The airfield sits on the Yukon River near the mouth of the Koyukuk River, roughly 30 miles west of Galena and about 290 air miles west of Fairbanks. It has a single gravel runway, 07/25, measuring about 4,000 by 75 feet, with medium-intensity runway edge lights and RNAV (GPS) instrument approaches.
Located about one mile southwest of the village, the airport is reached by informal local transport, including walking, ATVs and snowmachines in winter, since Koyukuk is not connected to the North American road network. Scheduled passenger flights are operated by regional carriers such as Wright Air Service, mainly connecting Koyukuk to Galena and Fairbanks.
Passenger facilities are minimal, with a small waiting shelter and no shops, restaurants or car rental counters. The airport remains an important lifeline for mail, freight and passenger travel in the region.
