About Kobuk Airport
Kobuk Airport is the small public-use airport serving Kobuk, a village on the Kobuk River in the Northwest Arctic Borough of Alaska. Activated in 1963, it is owned by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and operates as an unattended facility without a control tower.
The airport has a single gravel runway designated 9/27, measuring about 4,020 by 75 feet (1,225 by 23 m), with pilot-activated medium-intensity runway lighting. It mainly handles small aircraft and regional bush flights, linking Kobuk with hubs such as Kotzebue and nearby communities like Shungnak.
Because Kobuk is not connected to the state road system, the airport is an essential link for passengers, mail, supplies and medical travel. The village centre is within walking distance of the runway, and local movement continues by foot, ATV, snowmobile or boat depending on the season.
For visitors, the airport provides access to Kobuk Valley National Park and the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes above the Arctic Circle. On-site facilities are limited, so travellers should plan ahead and confirm flights with regional carriers.
