About Knox County Regional Airport
Knox County Regional Airport is a county-owned, public-use airport in Owls Head, Maine, about three miles south of downtown Rockland. It serves as the main air gateway for Rockland and the midcoast region, connecting the area to Boston through scheduled Cape Air flights and supporting substantial general aviation traffic.
The airport began as a Works Progress Administration project in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It was used by the U.S. Navy during World War II as the Rockland Naval Auxiliary Air Facility, later returned to the City of Rockland, and transferred to Knox County in 1968, when it received its current name.
A new terminal opened in 2010, replacing the trailers that had served passengers for years, and the primary runway was later extended to more than 5,400 feet. Today the compact terminal provides a café, gift shop, free Wi-Fi, seating and other passenger conveniences in a single building.
The airport is reached from Rockland via Route 73, with parking, taxis, rental cars and private transfers available for continuing to Rockland, Camden, Rockport, Thomaston and the surrounding coastal communities.
