About Kipnuk Airport
Kipnuk Airport is the only airport serving Kipnuk, a small Yup'ik community on the Kuguklik River in the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta of southwest Alaska. Opened in 1973 and owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, it provides an essential year-round air link for a village that is not connected to the state road system.
The airport sits just outside the village, only a few minutes from central Kipnuk and about 6 km (4 miles) inland from the Bering Sea coast. It has a single gravel runway and one small passenger terminal, and its main role is connecting Kipnuk with Bethel, the regional hub roughly 160 km (100 miles) to the northeast.
Scheduled commuter flights and air taxis carry passengers, mail and freight between Kipnuk, Bethel and nearby Delta communities. Passenger services at the airport are simple rather than resort-style: a heated waiting area, basic check-in and a baggage area replace the shops, restaurants and lounges found at larger airports.
Because Kipnuk is off the road network, air travel is the community's main connection to the rest of Alaska. Travelers should allow flexibility for weather-related schedule changes, and ground movement around the village is usually arranged locally with short transfers between the airport and nearby destinations.
