About Kansas City International Airport
Kansas City International Airport is the main international airport serving Kansas City and the surrounding Missouri and Kansas region. Opened in 1972, the airport replaced its original terminal layout with a new single terminal that opened in 2023, improving navigation and passenger flow.
Located about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of downtown Kansas City, MCI connects the region to domestic destinations and a growing number of international routes, including service to Mexico. It serves both leisure and business travelers, with a single terminal building organized across two concourses.
The airport is connected to Kansas City by public bus Route 229, taxis, rideshare services, private transfers and road links, while rental cars are available from an off-site facility with a free shuttle. These options make it relatively easy to continue to downtown, surrounding suburbs and nearby areas.
With locally inspired dining and retail, lounges, free Wi-Fi, charging stations and accessibility services, the airport functions as a convenient gateway for visitors arriving in the Kansas City area.
