About Kalaeloa Airport
Kalaeloa Airport (JRF) is a general aviation reliever airport on the southwestern coast of Oahu, Hawaii. It is operated by the Hawaii Department of Transportation's Airports Division and helps extend capacity at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), while also supporting U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue operations, Hawaii National Guard activity, flight training and general aviation users.
The airport occupies the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station, with runways dating from 1942. It is also known as John Rodgers Field, and its JRF designator honors Commander John Rodgers, who attempted the first flight from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1925. The name Kalaeloa means "long point" and refers to the southwestern tip of Oahu.
Located in the Kapolei area about 20 miles (32 km) west of downtown Honolulu, Kalaeloa provides an alternative arrival point for private and charter flights serving Ko Olina, Kapolei, Waikiki and the rest of Oahu. Air traffic control operates daily from 0600 to 2200, with the airport available as an alternate around the clock.
