Kakamega Airport (GGM)

Kakamega Airport is a small domestic airport serving Kakamega town and the wider Kakamega County in western Kenya. Located about 4 km from the town centre, it provides scheduled air links between the region and destinations such as Nairobi Wilson Airport, making it an important connection point for business and leisure travellers in Western Kenya. The airport was closed for renovation in 2013 to address runway problems and has since been rehabilitated with an extended runway, taxiway and expanded apron. The upgraded facility was reopened in December 2022, allowing commercial flights to resume under operator Skyward Express with Dash 8 aircraft. The airport has a single runway and one small passenger terminal handling domestic flights. Check-in, security screening, baggage collection and arrivals are all accommodated within a compact terminal area, which keeps the passenger experience relatively straightforward. Onward travel from the airport is mostly by taxi or private road transport, with a short drive into Kakamega town. From there, travellers can continue to destinations across the western region, including Kakamega Forest, Kisumu, Kitale and Eldoret.
