About Vihiga

Vihiga is a small administrative town in western Kenya and the headquarters of Vihiga County. It sits along the busy Kisumu–Kakamega road in a green, densely populated farming region of rolling hills, with the larger commercial centre of Mbale nearby.

The town lies within the traditional homeland of the Maragoli, one of the Luhya sub-groups, alongside the Banyore and Tiriki communities. Quaker missionary work at Kaimosi from the early 1900s helped shape the area's strong tradition of education, churches and community institutions.

Around Vihiga, the Maragoli Hills, also known as Mungoma Hills, rise above the farmland and contain the culturally significant Mungoma Caves. Nearby Bunyore Hills, Kibiri Forest and Kaimosi Forest offer short hikes, birdwatching and viewpoints over the surrounding countryside and Lake Victoria basin.

Agriculture drives much of local life, with tea, maize, bananas, dairy and small-scale trade supporting many households. Mbale is the county's main commercial hub, while Chavakali and other roadside centres provide markets, schools and services along the transport corridor.

For visitors, Vihiga works best as a quiet base for county business, cultural tourism and day trips between Kisumu and Kakamega. Accommodation and dining remain limited, so many travellers combine a visit with a stay in Kisumu, about 30 km away.
