About Jacksonville NAS (Towers Field)
Jacksonville Naval Air Station (Towers Field) is a major U.S. Navy installation located in Jacksonville, Florida, along the St. Johns River. Commissioned on October 15, 1940, it has served as one of the Navy's principal aviation hubs on the U.S. East Coast.
The airfield, known as Towers Field, was dedicated on October 14, 1960, in honor of Admiral John H. Towers, a pioneer of naval aviation. Today the station hosts patrol, reconnaissance and training squadrons, including Fleet Replacement Squadron VP-30, and supports P-8 Poseidon and P-3 Orion maritime patrol operations.
Located about 8 miles (13 km) south of downtown Jacksonville, the installation is primarily a military and government-use airfield rather than a commercial passenger airport. Access is generally limited to U.S. Navy, Department of Defense and authorized personnel.
The station is connected to the Jacksonville area by road via Roosevelt Boulevard (US 17) and nearby highways, with private vehicles, taxis, ride services and arranged transfers used for onward travel. Visitors planning to travel to or from the installation should confirm base access requirements in advance.
