The airfield dates back to the late 1930s, when it became the Hawthorne home of Northrop Aircraft, and was officially renamed Hawthorne Municipal Airport in 1948.
Located about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and roughly 3 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, the airport is positioned near the junction of the I-105 and I-405 freeways.
