Île Art – Waala Airport (BMY)

Île Art – Waala Airport, also known as Belep Islands Airport, serves the remote Belep Islands in the far north of New Caledonia. It provides a vital air link between Art Island, its main settlement Waala, and the rest of the territory, supporting passenger travel, essential supplies and medical evacuations.

Opened around 1955, the airport operates a single asphalt runway of about 600 metres and one small terminal building. Domestic services are flown mainly by Air Calédonie and Air Loyauté, typically using Twin Otter or ATR aircraft, with connections to Nouméa-Magenta and Koumac.

The airport sits on Art Island, a short distance from the village of Waala. There is no public bus or taxi service at the airfield, so most visitors arrange pickup in advance or use a private transfer for the short trip into the village.

Facilities are limited, with no shops, cafés, ATMs or Wi-Fi, so travelers should be self-sufficient and confirm schedules before departure. Despite its basic infrastructure, the airport remains an essential gateway for reaching one of New Caledonia's most culturally significant and isolated island communities.
