About North Province
Koné is the administrative capital of New Caledonia's North Province and a fast-growing town on the west coast of Grande Terre. It lies about a four-hour drive north of Nouméa along the RT1 highway and serves as a gateway to the northern half of the island.
The town's recent growth is closely linked to the Koniambo nickel project and the nearby Vavouto processing site, which brought new jobs, infrastructure and a modern provincial government presence. Despite this development, Koné remains rooted in Kanak bush culture, and the traditional name Koohnê is still widely used.
Visitors can explore the Pomémie Provincial Cultural Centre, set in a restored colonial house, where Kanak art, crafts and Lapita pottery found in the area are displayed. Outdoor attractions include walking trails on the Koniambo massif, horseback riding and the famous Heart of Voh, best admired on a microlight flight departing from Koné.
Koné is a practical base for exploring the west coast and crossing to the east coast via the Koné–Tiwaka road. A local market, modest hotels and simple restaurants serve self-drive travellers and the business visitors drawn by mining and provincial administration.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Koné offers a quieter side of New Caledonia than Nouméa: a town focused on rural life, nature and Kanak heritage, while still providing the services expected of a provincial capital.

North Province Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from roughly May to October brings comfortable temperatures and generally clearer, drier conditions for hiking, horseback riding and scenic flights. November to April is warmer and wetter, with a risk of cyclones, but the landscape is lush.
How to Get Around
Koné is compact and easy to explore on foot, but a rental car is the most practical way to reach the coast, the Koniambo trails and the Heart of Voh area. Air Calédonie connects Koné Airport with Nouméa, and the RAÏ bus company serves the west coast route.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is concentrated in Koné and nearby Pouembout, with small hotels, motels and self-catering apartments suited to road-trippers and business visitors. Staying in this area makes early starts for the Koniambo massif and day trips to Voh easier.
Food & Drink
Koné's food scene is modest and local, with market stalls, bakeries and small restaurants serving French and Pacific staples, seafood and fresh tropical produce. The morning market is a good place to find seasonal fruit and local snacks.
