About Hydaburg Seaplane Base

Hydaburg Seaplane Base is a state-owned, public-use seaplane base serving Hydaburg, a small city on the southwest coast of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. It connects the community to Ketchikan and the wider regional air network, and functions as an important access point for residents and visitors travelling to the island.

The facility was activated in 1959 and operates a single water landing area designated E/W, measuring approximately 5,000 by 2,000 feet. Rather than a conventional terminal building, the base uses docks and floats where scheduled and charter seaplanes arrive and depart, and it operates without a control tower or full-time attendance.

Hydaburg is about 45 air miles northwest of Ketchikan and is connected by road to other Prince of Wales Island communities such as Craig and Klawock. Ferry service and scheduled air links, including Essential Air Service flights to Ketchikan, tie the community to the rest of Southeast Alaska.

Passenger facilities at the seaplane base are limited, with no fuel service or full-service FBO. Weather reporting and a web camera support operations, and most services are available in the town of Hydaburg nearby. Travelers should confirm flight details with the operating carrier in advance.
