Hunter Army Airfield is a U.S. Army airfield in Savannah, Georgia, and a subordinate installation of nearby Fort Stewart. It is not a commercial passenger airport; instead, it supports Army aviation, special operations and other military units, including the 3rd Infantry Division's 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Savannah. The site began as Savannah's municipal airport in the 1930s before being acquired by the U.S. Army in 1940. It later operated as Hunter Air Force Base, and in 1967 the facility was transferred to the Army and became Hunter Army Airfield. Located about 2 miles southwest of Savannah, the airfield is roughly 10 km by road from downtown. It has road access from central Savannah and convenient connections to the Historic District, the Georgia coast and Tybee Island. The airfield features an 11,375 ft asphalt runway and extensive aircraft parking, and it serves as an important aviation and deployment hub for units based in the Savannah region. While public passenger services are not offered, the installation remains a key part of the area's military and aviation community.
