Houlton International Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Houlton and Aroostook County in northern Maine. Located close to the Canadian border, it also functions as a designated U.S. airport of entry, making it a practical crossing point for private and business aircraft traveling between the United States and New Brunswick. The airport sits about 2 miles east of downtown Houlton, with road access via US Route 1 and nearby Interstate 95. The site opened in 1940 and served as Houlton Army Air Base beginning in 1941 before becoming a civilian airport. It now supports general aviation, business travel, recreational flying and cross-border operations, with two runways and a main asphalt runway of approximately 5,015 feet. A single general aviation terminal and fixed-base operator provide passenger and pilot services, including a lounge, aviation fuel, aircraft parking, hangars, tiedowns and rental cars. Onward travel is mostly by private vehicle, taxi or rental car, since the airport is not served by scheduled commercial airlines. For visitors to Aroostook County, it offers a convenient entry point to Houlton, Presque Isle and the surrounding northern Maine region, as well as to nearby communities across the border in Canada.
