About Hooper Bay Airport

Hooper Bay Airport serves the coastal community of Hooper Bay in western Alaska's Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta. As a state-owned public-use airport, it provides the community's principal year-round air link for passengers, mail, freight and essential supplies, since the village has no road connection to the rest of the state.

The airport was activated in November 1949 and today operates with a single gravel runway, 14/32, measuring about 3,300 by 75 feet. Located roughly two miles (three kilometres) southwest of the village centre, it has no control tower and relies on a common traffic advisory frequency for pilot communications.

Regional carriers such as Grant Aviation, Ryan Air and Yute Commuter Service connect Hooper Bay primarily with Bethel, the regional hub, along with nearby villages such as Scammon Bay and Chevak. From Bethel, travelers can continue to Anchorage and the wider Alaska network. Weather in the Bering Sea can cause delays, so flexible planning is advisable.

The terminal is small and functional, offering basic passenger shelter rather than extensive commercial amenities. Onward travel to the village is usually arranged with local hosts using vehicles, ATVs or snowmachines depending on the season, so visitors are encouraged to arrange pickup and supplies in advance.
