About Hood Army Air Field
Hood Army Air Field (HLR), now known as Yoakum–DeFrenn Army Heliport, is a U.S. Army aviation facility located at Fort Cavazos near Killeen in Central Texas. It supports military helicopter and limited fixed-wing operations for the installation and its aviation units.
The airfield lies about 1 mile northeast of Killeen and features a single asphalt runway designated 16/34, with an elevation of roughly 910 feet. It functions primarily as a military heliport, and aircraft access is controlled and subject to prior permission.
Because it is a private-use military installation, HLR does not offer commercial passenger services or public terminals. Civilian travelers in the area are instead served by nearby Skylark Field in Killeen and Robert Gray Army Airfield to the southwest.
The facility is connected to Killeen and the wider Central Texas region by local road networks, with Fort Cavazos located just a short drive from the city. Its role makes it an important part of military aviation operations in the area.
