About Holloman Air Force Base
Holloman Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Otero County, New Mexico, near the city of Alamogordo. It operates primarily as a military airfield rather than a public commercial airport, supporting the 49th Wing's training and operational missions.
Established in 1942 as Alamogordo Army Air Field, the base was renamed in 1948 in honor of Colonel George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided-missile and pilotless aircraft research. Today the installation is home to the 49th Wing, which trains F-16 Viper and MQ-9 Reaper aircrews.
Located roughly six miles southwest of Alamogordo with road access along US Route 70/82, the base sits in the Tularosa Basin near White Sands National Park. The closest public airports for civilian travel are Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport and, farther away, El Paso International Airport.
Passenger movement at Holloman is limited to military airlift and the base's Air Mobility Command passenger terminal for eligible Space-Available travelers. Most civilian visitors therefore use road transfers, rental cars, or nearby commercial airports when traveling to Alamogordo, Las Cruces, and other southern New Mexico destinations.
