About Hilo International Airport
Hilo International Airport is the main airport serving Hilo and the eastern side of the Island of Hawaii. Located about two miles east of the city center, it is the primary air gateway for travelers visiting Hilo, Hilo Bay, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the Hamakua Coast.
The airport was known as General Lyman Field before 1989 and occupies approximately 1,250 acres along the island's eastern shore. Its modern passenger terminal, the General Lyman Terminal, was dedicated in 1976 and replaced earlier facilities. The airport's primary runway is 9,800 feet long, with a shorter crosswind runway used mainly for general aviation.
Today, Hilo International Airport is served primarily by interisland airlines, including Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Mokulele Airlines, with some mainland connections. Its terminal complex includes commuter facilities, ticket lobbies, security screening, baggage claim, dining, and retail services for passengers.
