About Hill Air Force Base

Hill Air Force Base is a major United States Air Force installation in Davis County, Utah, just south of Ogden and bordering Layton and Clearfield. Opened in 1940 as Hill Field and renamed Hill Air Force Base in 1948, it has long served as a key maintenance, logistics and fighter-operations hub for the western United States.

Located about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, the base is home to the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, the 75th Air Base Wing, and the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings, which operate F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Its single main runway is roughly 13,500 feet long, supporting a wide range of military flight operations.

Hill AFB is a military airfield with controlled access, and most aircraft require prior permission to land. Commercial airline travelers in the area typically use Ogden-Hinckley Airport about 5 miles to the north or Salt Lake City International Airport about 20 miles to the south. The base sits near Interstate 15, providing road connections to Ogden, Salt Lake City and communities along the Wasatch Front.

For authorized personnel and official visitors, the installation offers operational aviation support including fuel, maintenance and de-icing, alongside military base services. Its position near the Wasatch Mountains also places it close to northern Utah's outdoor recreation and ski areas.
