About Hickory Regional Airport

Hickory Regional Airport is a city-owned general aviation airport serving Hickory, Catawba County and the surrounding western North Carolina foothills. Located about three miles west of downtown Hickory just off U.S. 321, the airport provides a practical gateway for business, private and charter aviation in a region between Charlotte and the Appalachian Mountains.

The airport opened to aircraft traffic in May 1940 as Hickory Municipal Airport and later became known as Hickory Regional Airport. Its terminal building was completed in 1960, an air traffic control tower was commissioned in 1973, and the facility now operates one asphalt runway, 6/24, measuring 6,400 by 150 feet.

For decades the airport hosted scheduled airline service, most recently Delta Connection flights to Atlanta until 2005. Today it operates as a general aviation airport while retaining its FAA Part 139 commercial service certification, with aircraft handling, fuel and customer services provided through the City of Hickory-operated fixed-base operator.

The compact terminal and FBO facility offers free Wi-Fi, a pilot lounge, flight planning support, meeting space, free parking and aviation fuel, making it a convenient arrival point for travelers continuing to Hickory, Lenoir, Morganton, Lake Hickory, Lake James and other destinations across the region.
