About Heglig Airport
Heglig Airport is a small public and military airfield serving the Heglig oilfield area in South Kordofan, Sudan, close to the border with South Sudan. It primarily supports oilfield logistics, government aviation and limited charter traffic rather than scheduled commercial airline services.
The airport lies within the Muglad Basin and developed alongside the Heglig oilfield, which began production in 1996. It has played both civilian and military roles and has hosted Sudanese Air Force helicopter squadrons, with gravel runways reflecting its operational focus.
Located about 120 km from Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, and roughly 700 km from Khartoum, the airport is reached mainly by road. Nearby settlements include Abyei and Bentiu, and onward travel usually requires private vehicles or pre-arranged transfers.
Passenger facilities are limited and geared toward operational traffic, so visitors should confirm arrangements in advance. Despite its small scale, the airport remains an important transport point for the oilfield region.
