About Hartness State Airport

Hartness State Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Springfield and the surrounding Windsor County region of Vermont. It was established on land donated by inventor, entrepreneur and Vermont Governor James Hartness, becoming Vermont's first airfield, and was later renamed Hartness State Airport in 1959. Charles Lindbergh visited the field in 1927 during his post-transatlantic aviation tour.

Located about three miles northwest of Springfield's central business district, the airport focuses on private, business and corporate aircraft rather than scheduled airline service. Its main runway, Runway 5/23, is approximately 5,500 feet long and jet-capable, with a shorter crosswind runway, Runway 11/29, supporting smaller aircraft.

The compact general aviation terminal building includes a pilot lounge, restrooms, a conference room and office space. Fuel, aircraft maintenance, hangars and tiedown parking are available on the field.

Road access is straightforward, with Springfield town centre only a short drive away. The airport also sits within reach of the Upper Valley and destinations such as Okemo Mountain Resort and Woodstock, and onward travel can be arranged by taxi, rental car or private transfer.
