Hartford-Brainard Airport (HFD) is a public-use general aviation airport serving Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, and the central Connecticut region. Located about three miles southeast of downtown Hartford, it is designated as a reliever airport for Bradley International Airport and provides aviation access for private, corporate, and charter travelers.
Opened in 1921 as one of the country's first municipal airports, the airfield was named for Hartford Mayor Newton C. Brainard. Commercial airline operations moved to Bradley International Airport in the 1950s, and Hartford-Brainard now focuses on general aviation. The facility covers about 201 acres and includes two asphalt runways, a seasonal turf runway, and a helipad.
The airport is owned by the Connecticut Airport Authority and operates an FAA air traffic control tower daily from 6 am to midnight. Fixed-base operators provide fueling, concierge, ground support, aircraft maintenance, avionics, flight training, and aircraft storage, with additional services including charter, aircraft rental, and car rental.
Located minutes from downtown and close to I-91 and I-84, the airport is convenient for private and business travelers continuing to Hartford and surrounding areas in central Connecticut.
