About Hao Airport
Hao Airport (HOI) serves Hao atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago of French Polynesia, acting as a small gateway for the eastern atolls. Located about 8 km from the village of Otepa, it links this remote island with Papeete and neighboring islands through Air Tahiti's inter-island network.
The airport has a notably long 3,380-metre runway built during the era of French nuclear testing to accommodate large military transport aircraft. It later transitioned to civilian use in 2000 and now operates through a single compact, open-air passenger terminal.
Transport between the airport and Otepa is typically arranged through guesthouses, the communal shuttle or private transfers, with a short road journey of around 10–15 minutes. There are no fixed public bus or rail services on the atoll.
Facilities are basic but sufficient for regional travel, with restrooms, shaded seating, a small snack outlet and parking near the terminal. The airport remains a practical stopover for island-hopping across the Tuamotu islands.
