About Grissom Air Reserve Base
Grissom Air Reserve Base is a joint-use military and general aviation airfield located near Peru, Indiana, in the north-central part of the state. The facility opened in 1942 as Naval Air Station Bunker Hill and later became a United States Air Force base; it was renamed in 1968 in honor of astronaut Gus Grissom.
Today the installation is home to the Air Force Reserve's 434th Air Refueling Wing and other military units, while the civilian side, known as Grissom Aeroplex, opened to general aviation in 2008. There is no scheduled commercial airline service, and the airfield primarily supports military, private jet, and general aviation traffic.
The airfield lies about 8 km (5 mi) south of Peru and roughly 18 km (11 mi) north of Kokomo, with Indianapolis approximately 100 km (60 mi) to the south. Access is by road, mainly via US-31, and most travelers continue by private vehicle, taxi, or prearranged transfer.
Its single 3,810 m (12,501 ft) runway is among the longest in Indiana, allowing the airfield to handle large aircraft and heavy military transports. The Grissom Air Museum near the entrance preserves the base's aviation heritage.
