Grayling Airport (KGX)

Grayling Airport is a small public-use airfield serving Grayling, a village on the west bank of the Yukon River in interior Alaska. Because no roads connect Grayling with other communities, the airport acts as a lifeline for passenger travel, mail, supplies, and medical connections to regional hubs such as Aniak. Located about one mile south of the village centre, the airport is owned by the State of Alaska and operates without a control tower. A single gravel runway handles the light aircraft and air taxi services that serve the area, while a compact waiting shelter replaces the large terminal buildings found at bigger airports. Most trips connect Grayling with nearby river communities and larger regional airports through small scheduled and charter aircraft. Ground movement between the airport and the village is short and typically handled by local pickups, ATVs, snowmachines, or a short walk, depending on the season. Passenger facilities are intentionally basic, so travelers should carry food, water, and clothing suited to Alaskan weather. Even with limited infrastructure, Grayling Airport remains an essential year-round gateway for this remote part of the Yukon-Koyukuk region.
