About Granite Mountain Air Station
Granite Mountain Air Station is a remote private airfield in western Alaska, located on the Seward Peninsula north of Norton Bay. It was developed as a U.S. Air Force site during the Cold War, when Granite Mountain served as a radar and communications relay station connected to the White Alice Communications System.
The airfield lies roughly 130 air miles (about 210 km) northeast of Nome, about 33 miles from Koyuk, and about 40 miles from Buckland. Today it remains a restricted, official-use facility operated by the U.S. Air Force, supporting periodic government, charter, and support flights rather than scheduled passenger service.
The site has a single gravel runway of approximately 3,800 feet, suitable for smaller aircraft and certain larger support aircraft. There is no control tower and no published instrument approach, and access is by air only, with civil operations requiring advance permission.
Because there is no public road link, travelers using the airfield typically continue by connecting flight or charter to Nome, Koyuk, Buckland, or other Seward Peninsula communities. The airfield functions as a remote logistics point rather than a conventional passenger gateway.
