About Gonzalo Mejía Airport

Gonzalo Mejía Airport is a small regional airport serving Turbo, a port city on Colombia's Gulf of Urabá in the Antioquia department. Established around 1936, the airfield is named after Gonzalo Mejía, an Antioquian aviation pioneer who promoted the development of air transport in the region. The airfield later served as a military base during the Second World War.

The airport sits on a small peninsula about 2 kilometres southwest of central Turbo. Its single runway runs through wooded terrain, and coastal erosion has reduced the usable length so that the airport currently handles mainly rotary-wing operations rather than scheduled fixed-wing flights. Fixed-wing services for the Urabá area are typically routed through nearby Antonio Roldán Betancourt Airport in Apartadó.

Because of its location, the airport provides a short connection to Turbo's town centre, port facilities and onward road routes across Urabá. Taxis and private transfers cover the distance in only a few minutes, while buses and road links continue to Apartadó, Necoclí and other communities.

Passenger facilities at the airport remain basic, with waiting and check-in areas and limited food and drink options. Travellers can find a fuller range of hotels, restaurants and services in central Turbo.
