Captain Luis F. Gómez Niño Air Base (API)

Captain Luis F. Gómez Niño Air Base, commonly known as Apiay Air Base, is a military air facility of the Colombian Aerospace Force located in the village of Apiay, about 11 km southeast of Villavicencio. The base is home to Combat Air Command No. 2 and supports security, surveillance, airlift and humanitarian operations across the Meta department and the eastern Llanos region.

Its origins date to 1933, when the unit was created as San José del Guaviare Air Base. In December 1947 it moved to Apiay and became the Apiay National Airfield, later growing into a major combat air command with the arrival of jet aircraft in the 1970s.

The base has a paved runway of approximately 2,500 metres and modern air navigation aids, but it is primarily a military installation rather than a public passenger airport. During road emergencies it has temporarily supported civilian flights between Bogotá and Villavicencio, with access managed by the airline and military authorities.

Villavicencio's regular commercial flights operate from La Vanguardia Airport, while Gómez Niño Air Base remains a restricted military facility. Road access from the base to central Villavicencio takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes, with private transfers, taxis and local ground transport available in the area.
