About Gilgit Airport
Gilgit Airport is a small domestic airport serving Gilgit, the administrative center of Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region. It sits about 2.3 km east of the city and acts as an air gateway for travelers heading to the northern mountain areas, including Hunza and other Karakoram valleys.
Its single terminal opened in 2014 and replaced earlier facilities, adding modern check-in and separate arrival and departure sections. Because the airport is set in mountainous terrain with a short runway, scheduled services are operated with smaller turboprop aircraft, mainly Pakistan International Airlines ATR 42 flights between Gilgit and Islamabad.
The airport lies at an elevation of around 1,462 m and operates mainly in daylight under visual flight conditions. Its runway 07/25 measures about 1,646 m, which restricts it to smaller aircraft rather than larger jets.
By road, the airport connects to Gilgit city and the Karakoram Highway, from where travelers can continue to Hunza, Skardu and other destinations in northern Pakistan by car, taxi or pre-arranged transport.
