General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport is the main international airport serving Tampico and the surrounding Tamaulipas Gulf Coast region. The site has deep roots in Mexican aviation: the original airfield, then known as Campo de Aviación George Lawrence Rihl, opened in 1929 and handled the country's first commercial flight to Mexico City. The current terminal opened in 1970, and the airport was also the first in Mexico to be equipped with an ILS landing system.
