About Garner Field
Garner Field is a public general aviation airport serving Uvalde and the surrounding Texas Hill Country. Located three miles east of downtown Uvalde, it functions as a practical gateway for private pilots, charter aircraft, and visitors travelling to Garner State Park, the Frio River, and the wider region, with San Antonio about 85 miles to the east.
The airport opened in October 1941 as a World War II Army Air Force primary pilot training school and was named for John Nance Garner, the 32nd Vice President of the United States and a Uvalde native. After the base was deactivated in June 1945, the facility was transferred to the City of Uvalde for use as a municipal airport.
Today, Garner Field operates a single asphalt runway, 15/33, measuring 5,256 by 100 feet, and provides FBO services, fuel, aircraft maintenance, hangars, tiedowns, and a passenger lounge. There is no scheduled commercial airline service, and the airport is used primarily for general aviation, flight training, and private charters.
Road access is direct from U.S. Highways 90 and 83, making it convenient to reach downtown Uvalde in a few minutes or continue toward San Antonio, Del Rio, and Hill Country destinations. Car rental, private transfers, and chauffeured vehicles can be arranged for onward travel.
